George A. Hamm

George A. Hamm lived: August 13, 1934 - January 23, 2004
George Hamm was a member of the USMAF Board of Directors, the Central Technical Committee, and the Regional Representative for Central California.
As a retired educator, Mr. Hamm brings many years of educational experience to this University effort. He was the holder of 5 degrees in higher education including 3 master’s degrees. He has served on many educational committees devoted to learning innovation, and has taught at the University level within his specialty of hypnosis and educational reform. He lectured frequently throughout the Country sharing his model of "teaching to the 90% of the mind" for the purpose of performance enhancement in athletics. His hypnosis cassette tapes are being used by athletes of every level throughout the world; professional, Olympic, College/University, interscholastic, and he has been asked to employ his performance method with youth T-ball athletes.
Mr. Hamm was a certified clinical hypnotherapist having been trained by Gil Boyne who is considered to be the finest teacher of hypnosis in the world and whose school – The Hypnotist Training Institute of Los Angeles – is located in Glendale, California. Mr. Hamm was a member of the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners and has been in practice since 1982, and was honored to be asked to assist the judo athletes in training for the then 1984 Olympics. He was responsible for the mental preparation model for the athletes. Seeing the success of the judo athletes, athletes from other sports in training at the Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs asked Mr. Hamm for assistance as well.
While serving with the 1st Marine Division in Korea in 1953, Mr. Hamm was introduced to the martial arts and became a serious student and competitor at that time studying with Giichiro Nakamura, (then 8th dan). Upon his return to the United States, Mr. Hamm entered what was to become a life-time involvement with education and during his early days of competition became the 181 lb weight division collegiate champion. He was an active competitor up to the age of 39 at which time he switched to coaching and writing and has been published many times in a variety of publications devoted to judo. Mr Hamm was also student of the late Tasuke Hagio, a jujitsu expert representing the late Jushinsai Sato, the 19th successor of the Yagiu Shingan Ryu, and 13th succesor of the Yamato Ryu schools of Pre-Kano Jujitsu.
Mr. Hamm was a member of the United States Judo Association and through his association with this organization took part in many programs serving as Chairman of the Coaches Certification Program, and was in leadership roles in many other USJA efforts. He was also a member of the United States Judo Federation and served for a time on the Interscholastic Committee, as he was one of the 3 pioneers of school judo in the United States. He was also a member of the United States Judo, Inc.
Mr. Hamm’s martial arts achievements include being a Founder of the National Judo Institute located in Colorado Springs, being a part of many administrative efforts for martial arts development in the United States and has traveled widely as an unofficial representative of American Martial Arts. He was an 8th degree Black Belt in Kodokan Judo, and an 8th degree Black Belt in Jujitsu. He was a certified Master level Instructor, and a certified Master level Rank Examiner. Mr. Hamm has received many honors in education, the Martial Arts, and as the developer of a unique system of performance enhancement through hypnosis.
